Simple 5-Step Skincare Routine for Men

Published: May 6, 2022

There’s a common misconception that skincare is just for women. But men are just as likely to get wrinkles, struggle with acne, or experience dry and sensitive skin as women are.

Men, you don’t need to have 12 skincare products in your medicine cabinet. But a handful of effective products can go a long way in dealing with skin damage and preventing premature aging down the road.

There are four main benefits of a regular skincare routine:

1. Hydrating prevents wrinkles, skin sensitivity, and dryness

2. Exfoliating dead skin prevents acne and ingrown hair

3. Protecting skin from sun damage with SPF

4. Keeping skin healthy and youthful

To create your super simple skincare routine, start by evaluating your skin type. Next, select a few key products to add into your everyday routine, and reap the benefits of healthy skin for the rest of your life.

"While men typically have more oil naturally in their skin, they are also prone to more irritation from shaving, so products that are purifying as well as soothing are important.

WHAT SKIN TYPE DO YOU HAVE?

What’s your skin like at baseline? No, we’re not talking about whether you get acne or not, but the actual character of your skin.

Your skin type can change over time depending on your age, activity level, and hormones. Skin type matters because it determines which skincare products that will work best for your skin.

Normal

Normal skin is defined by what it’s not: It’s not excessively oily, dry, or irritated. If your skin tends to look just fine without any maintenance, you probably have a normal skin type.

People with normal skin can use most skincare products without a problem.

Oily

Everyone has oily skin if they don’t wash for a few days, but if your skin is chronically oily—no matter how clean you keep it—you probably have an oily skin type.

People with oily skin want to use gel-based cleansers and moisturizers, since these won’t add extra oil to the skin.

Dry

Many people experience seasonal dryness in the winter months, but some people experience flaky, itchy, dry skin on their face year-round.

If you have dry skin, look for cream-based products that will help with hydrating your skin.

Combination

People with combination skin have oily and dry areas. For example, combination skin might present as an oily nose or forehead with dry cheeks or chin.

If you have combination skin, you may need to treat your face in zones, using a combination of different products in different areas depending on your areas of oiliness and dryness.

Sensitive

Sensitive skin is easily irritated by products or the environment. People with sensitive skin have to be careful which skincare products they use, since some products can cause rashes or redness.

If you have sensitive skin, look for products that are labeled as “gentle” or “hypoallergenic.”

Mature Skin

Mature skin isn’t technically a skin type. However, as we age, our skin ages in particular ways, making mature skin worth differentiating from other skin types.

Mature skin is drier, thinner, and less elastic. Skincare products that promote collagen production and protect the skin barrier are best for people with this skin type. Additionally, products that provide hydration are important for those with mature skin.

SIMPLE SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR MEN (ONLY 5 STEPS!)

This 5–10 minute routine can be used morning and night to protect and nourish skin. If you’d like to really replenish your skin overnight, swap out your lightweight morning moisturizer for a thicker, more hydrating version in the evening.

Step 1: Wash with a Gentle Cleanser

Wash your face every morning and evening with a gentle cleanser to clear your pores of pollutants and sweat. Skin Regimen Cleansing Cream is a unisex formula designed to deep clean and detox skin. Free from synthetic fragrances, it’s perfect for all skin types and very effective in removing also pollution residues.

For an even deeper clean, wash with Skin Regimen Enzymatic Powder twice a week. When combined with water, it cleanses while removing dead skin cells. Thanks to Chlorella, a unicellular microalgae, it captures and eliminates pollutants, effective in particular as a heavy metal detox.

Step 2: Use an Exfoliating Product Once or Twice a Week

Exfoliating your skin helps prevent buildup of dead skin cells, which can lead to acne and ingrown hairs. Comfort Zone Active Pureness Gel, with 3% Gluconolactone, exfoliates while cleansing. It can be used daily on oily or acne-prone skin to gently cleanse and renew skin.

If you already have a cleanser you love, add Comfort Zone Essential Scrub to your skincare regimen to mechanically exfoliate, transforming dull skin to luminous, glowing skin. Use it a few times a week to brighten skin without over exfoliating, since over exfoliation can make your skin sensitive and dry.

Step 3: Layer a Serum

Chances are, you don’t have a bottle of serum in the back of your medicine cabinet. While serums seem intimidating, they’re really just a way to get some skin-boosting chemicals deep into your skin.

Apply a few drops of Skin Regimen Vitamin C Booster every evening before your moisturizer to improve the appearance of dark spots and dilated pores. It’s gentle on your skin while creating a natural brightening effect.

Step 4: Use a Hydrating Antiaging Eye Cream

The skin around your eyes is thinner than any other skin on your face besides your lips, so it’s easy for wrinkles to develop there. Eye care might conjure up an image of women at the spa with cucumbers over their eyes, but eye care for men is actually very simple.

Choose an anti-aging caffeinated eye cream, like Skin Regimen Lift Eye Cream, to reduce the appearance of dark circles, puffiness, and wrinkles around the eyes. Apply to the eye area in the morning and evening for maximum effect.

Step 5: Add a Moisturizer, Followed by SPF Protection

Moisturizer is a vital component of any skincare routine, since it keeps your skin firm, hydrated, and nourished and restores your skin’s balance after cleansing and shaving.

Skin Regimen facial fluid with Tasmanian pepper, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, is the perfect moisturizer to use in the morning to hydrate without clogging pores. It can also be used as a post-shave fluid to soothe sensitive skin.

Comfort Zone gel cream moisturizer with hyaluronic acid can be applied day and night to protect your skin from dehydration, the first cause of fine lines and wrinkles.

If you have naturally oily skin, moisturize with Active Pureness Fluid, since it will hydrate your skin without making it appear shiny or oily.

Whether you’re outside doing yard work, exercising, or just enjoying the sunshine, your skin is constantly being exposed to harmful UV rays. The importance of SPF can’t be overstated—it protects your skin from sun damage, which can lead to skin cancer. It also reduces your chance of developing fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Remember to use it always as the final step in your skincare routine.

Comfort Zone Sun Soul is the new innovative, sun care line with highly biodegradable formulas sunscreens tested to respect the marine environment and DNA-peptide for effective anti-aging protection. Try Sun SoulCream SPF30 for very water-resistant sunscreen, ideal for face & body, that provides long-lasting protection for the skin.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A HASSLE

At a minimum, all men should wash and moisturize (with SPF!) morning, night, and after exercise. With a couple simple products and a few extra minutes in front of the mirror, you can perfect a simple skincare routine that will give you the best skin of your life.
